There's a lot to be learned from a busman's holiday. Although my day job is as a professional VR developer, I'm such a VR nerd that I just couldn't help but get involved in the VRChat scene. I love its anything goes anarchy and manga aesthetic.
To my surprise, working under the constraints of the VRChat SDK, these developers have come up with a ton of great little optimisation hacks that I've now fed back into my day to day work. Everything from Blender tools for skinned mesh optimisation to highly performant matcap shaders. Sometimes having fun is the best way to learn new things.
